Water is the number one enemy of your chimney system from the outside brick, stone or stucco to the inside structure from the flue to the firebox. Because bricks absorb water and actually pass water through from the outside to the inside, creating a barrier where vapor can pass through but water can’t is a great way to extend the life of your chimney appliance.

How It’s Done

First we have to determine the best product to use. Most of the time we use a water-based formula. However, if you have had a water repellent applied to your masonry chimney in the past, then we will use a solvent-based product. That is because  it takes a solvent-based repellent to cover another solvent-based product.

We brush and clean the brick, then apply a coating of water repellent, covering all the exposed brick and mortar. This will create a barrier and help protect your chimney structure on the outside from spalling, scaling, deterioration, and freeze/thaw damage.

We have been using the Chimney Saver Water Repellent for almost twenty years and have had great success with it. Because chimneys extend above the roof line, they get an enormous amount of rain during an average year. Keeping water at bay gives the brick the ability to continue to breathe as designed, while at the same time, combating the elements that lead it to break apart and flake.
